All the rookies aren’t very happy as they prepare to take the Chunin Exam. Especially for Naruto’s team who have so many rivals, they will need help from a fellow ninja named Kabuto to know what they’re up against. Will Naruto and his friends be able to last through the exam?
Rock Lee challenges Sasuke to a one-on-one fight. Naruto grows angry and attacks him, only to be beaten in one attack. Sasuke realizes the challenge and eagerly accepts. But will Sasuke be defeated just as easily by this mysterious ninja? Sasuke’s only advantage seems to be his Sharingan, but what happens when not even that will work?
Starts with a recap of last episode, Neji asked Sasuke what his name is but he didn’t reply. Then Sasuke, Sakura, and Naruto leave. Neji and Tenten decide to leave as well but Lee says that he will catch up to them later.
Sasuke have knowledge that he has a powerful rival out there after the three ninjas take their leave. On the next day, Kakashi announces that he has recommended all of them for the Chunin Exams. Being different from Naruto and Sasuke which are pleased, Sakura is afraid of letting everyone down. Also, someone decides they aren’t ready and decides to test their abilities.
Gaara order Kankuro for coming to the village and start something with the kids. Sasuke is haunted by Gaara’s evil eyes, while Gaara is impressed that Sasuke could hit Kankuro’s hand so easily with a rock. The three are Genins of the Hidden Village of the Sand from the Country of Wind. They came to this village to take the Chunin exam. Before they walk away, Sasuke and Gaara exchange names and hard looks.
With their latest mission complete, it’s time once again for the group to go back to mediocre missions. After all are done, Konohamaru and his friends pay a visit to Naruto. All which result in being chased by Sakura. Everyone is soon over though, as two mysterious ninja block their way, and one of them isn’t too happy with Konohamaru. Sasuke arrives to save the day, but the leader of the group shows up, with stealth skills that surprise even Sasuke. Meanwhile, the Third Hokage announces that it’s time once again for the Chunin selection exams.
Naruto wakes up, eats breakfast, and heads out to meet the others. Sasuke and Sakura are waiting on the bridge for their daily missions. When Naruto and Sasuke see each other, the tension between them mounts. Kakashi shows up late as usual with a handful of missions consisting mainly of errands and household chores. Naruto is very focused on beating Sasuke throughout each task and ends up messing up most of his chores. He not only de-weeds a woman’s garden, but removes her herbs as well. He almost gets pulled over a waterfall until Sasuke saves him. And his dog walks him instead of the other way around. Kakashi senses that today is an off day for teamwork and sends the three home. Sasuke takes one more shot at Naruto by telling him that if he doesn’t want to owe him anything, Naruto will need to become stronger than him..

The Demon of the Hidden Mist takes his vengeance on Gato and all of those dumb enough to follow him. He apologizes to Haku for what he did to the kind little boy. After the group takes care of the rest of Gato’s men, Zabuza asks Kakashi one final request, to see Haku one final time which is Zabuza’s requiem.
Zabuza is confronted by his boss Gato who is planning to kill Zabuza because he was too expensive. Zabuza now annoyed decides to cancel the fight with Kakashi and fight Gato’s men. Meanwhile Gato approaches the dead body of Haku and snaps the neck even though he’s dead, this caused Naruto to go berserk but Kakashi holds him back.
Naruto ask Zabuza “say something too, weren’t you friends!? but Zabuza said “shut up, kid. Haku is already dead”. “As Gato used me, I used Haku. That’s all it was”. Naruto then starts saying a speech about Haku and how much he loved Zabuza and then we have a flashback to the fights between Naruto, Sasuke and Haku.
When Kakashi prepares to stop Zabuza, Haku suddenly sacrifices his own life to spare Zabuza. Unfortunately Zabuza is ready for another round while Kakashi isn’t playing around this time. Failing, Zabuza is confronted by his employer, who has decided to take matters into his own hands.
Meanwhile, in the Wave Country, Inari goes around trying to gather people to fight against Gato. He approaches his uncle, Mr. Giichi but Giichi denies him help. Giichi’s wife says that it’s possible that Inari is more of a man that Giichi is. Inari realized the will to fight that both Naruto and his father possesses and Naruto’s advice of never to give up.
When Naruto takes out his rage with Kyubi’s chakra for killing his friend Sasuke on Haku, he doesn’t stand a chance. He realizes that Haku was the boy he met at the forest sometime ago. Haku tells Naruto the story of his past how he was hated because of his power, and asks for Naruto to do one favor for him to kill him. Since he took away his dreams, he wants Naruto to kill him. Will Naruto do the one thing he could never do, kill another person, and do as Haku wishes?
Continuation from the last episode where Kyubi’s Chakra was released from Naruto. Naruto rushes over to Haku and Haku tries to stop him by throwing senbon needles. It was useless though as the chakra deflected his attacks. Hake decides to move to a different mirror and tries to attack again but this time it hits Naruto in the back.
